  2. I think ABC expanding their coverage for their radio station especially to Uva & East. That means that they don't have motive to start their closed radios and they may be eyeing to start TV station rather than doing any nonsense.

  5. Wow, Thank you for your info Sam.

I told you before Sam that they mentioned about Sun & Sha FM on their AD as ABC radio Networks.

So now It's gr8 to have ABC Tv networks as well.

I think it's really good to have 3 huge media networks as MBC/MTV, VOA & ABC which should bring healthy environment in Sri Lankan media Industry.

  10. Nik I hope you're not the Owner of Derana or ABC and not the media minister as well.

How can you make sure that those 3 networks only will be giants?

  12. If TRC's plan to launch a broadcast satellite and seize all terrestrial transmissions becomes true then ABC, Derana and lot more new media companies will have channels/frequencies.

  13. there is a article on October Go magazine about 'Digital Television' read it and you will get some answers for this frequency problem.

  14. Nik,
Ofcourse there are no proper frequencies available for Colombo area but still there are few frequencies available depending on the output power used for transmitters. in this case, there are about six frequencies available for colombo area. if you want you can obtain more technical details from the TRC

    ReplyDelete
  15. nishantha: Digital terrestrial is not that easy in Sri Lanka as you think and as people demonstrate it. There are lots of terrain constrain comes into the picture for digital transmission carried out in higher modulation schemas. You need to read some info about DVB-T and pros and cons and compare them in reality in Sri Lanka.

And even to do Digital Terrestrial, again spectrum is a problem. We do not have proper spacing in the current spectrum for this.

Current trail in colombo has been carried out in available spectrum in UHF edge band, and who ever involved in that trail might know the results as they were not as what they expected.

    But

Digital satellite is different and way to go. Specially in a country like sri lanka.

    ....

Rasika: Why dont you list down those 6 frequencies here, so ppl who are interesting (ABC, Derana) can apply for that.

Both of them and probably the TRC also un aware about those 6 frequencies.

(May be you can charge some consultation fee)

  20. in this sunday, Sunday observer paper an advertisement, they looking for manager for new English tv channel. Their address is PO Box 1555, Colombo. Is this Derana address no?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Rasika: you seems to have done some home work. Ok lets have a look on your frequencies.

In Sri Lanka (and in most of the countries) FM sound broadcasting frq assignment is done based on grid and power basis and the transmission is wide-band operation in order carry out the stereo signal in a nominal loudness level. To archive this a sound broadcasting carrier needs to have minimum 300KHz of spectrum bandwitdth to operate the desired levels without interfiering to the adjuscent channel. Thats basics.

    Now re your frequencies.

105.4 - 105.6 is operational from colombo, so its practically impossible to carry out another transmission 105.4 without interfiering to each other

102 - 102.2 is been allocated from Magalkanda. magalkanda and colombo is on the same grid so again space is 200KHz which is not enough.

94.7 - 94.5 is from colombo, derana. Its again not practical to have 94.7 from colombo which will interfier to 94.5.

These are both practicle broadcasting + theory + regulations comes together when allocation frequency.

You can go ahead and start a transmission on these frequencies, but it will either interfier to the operational channel or either your transmission has to be very narrowed bandwidth which you wont be able to operate a competitive channel.

    rgds

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nik,
I know what you say and the practical situation but you have to clarify the below situation
87.6 Mhz - SLBC using for Colombo (City FM)
87.8 Mhz - VOA using for Colombo (real radio)

and many more frequencies especially in Kandy were given 200Khz band with

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ RASIKA

Thats why there is always an interference especially in car radios ( even with digital tuners), in the Thumulla, Babma, Nawala and Independence square area, as SLBC 87.6 clashes with REAL 87.8. Even yesterday i experienced this when listening to REAL in NAWALA in my car

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes it is the truth. That is why I tell that if TRC really wants to issue frequencies, they can do so.
I can still remember, on the day when the 87.8Mhz frequency was given to VOA for real radio, I heard the Dasa Desin program on TNL Isira and during this program, Mr. Shan Wicramasingha together with Hudson Samarasingha have blamed the issuing of this frequency as it obstructs their frequency of 88Mhz from Piliyandala. But later they have changed this frequency to 88.1Mhz and now they are running on that.
But unfortunately these regulations & technical reasons are valid only normal people and If TRC wants they can change any regulation for their sake

    ReplyDelete
  27. At least now you ppl talk with facts, rather than dreams :) like ABC and Derana getting more and more frequencies.

  29. Its not TRC. This is what happen when every tom, dick and harriot wants to do tv & radio channels. Sooner they start, they figure out that its not that sweat cake they were dream about.

Beleive me or not, only those few giants going to be remain in the market and all these small channels going to go down the drain as what's been demonstrated by TV2.

  30. Looks like PEOPLE'S MEDIA NETWORK is having a lot of issues these days...Now 'RADIO 1' has stopped broadcasting to Down-South on 99FM Mhz. There's a rumour going on stating that they have sold the frequency to the politician Anarkali!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. City FM Colombo having 2 frequencies one is 87.6 , other 91.2 but 87.6 not clear most of the areas, as per the SLBC information 87.6 power is higher than the other. 200 MHz difference will be possible if both the frequencies are not used in the same area and depends on the both stations transmission power.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Kumar , Small Correction City Fm Have 3 Frequencies 91.2 Fm After That 87.6 And 92.2 All These Frequency Are Working Well

  34. Oh what happened to peoples media network.

Anyone knows whether they sold their frequencies to someone?

People do you know anything about Sumathi TV? If you do so please update on it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is the case. Everyone starts radio channels and now there are plenty of radio channels. But the problem is that every one find it difficult to survive in the competitive environment. So if you go through the details, it can be seen that most of them are not making profits.
    1. V FM – running at loss
    2. Lak FM – running at loss
    3. Siyatha – running at loss
    4. Radio one – running at loss
    5. SLBC – running at loss
    6. Lakhanda – running at loss
    7. Sath FM – running at loss
    8. Max radio – running at loss
    9. Isira FM – running at loss
    10. Isura FM – running at loss
    11. Ran FM – running at loss

Now you see the problems in the environment, it is extremely difficult to survive.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Rasika you are absolutely correct. There are unnecessary radio station running without any hope for us & for them also.

I think these stations should closed down their stations and give some space in frequencies.

    ReplyDelete
  37. How come every one now came down to facts and figures and the real truth :)

    Glad to see that.

By the way, from the above list, SLBC, Lakhanda and siyatha is actually not sitting on that row. They are been backed by strong companies and are doing well as others.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nik,
    yes it is true.
    the thing is

    1. SLBC – running at loss but funded by the government treasury to eradicate the loss
    2. Lakhanda – If take only the radio channel, it is running at loss but it is not a problem as sister channel ITN is making hell of money and has a huge profit margin
    3. Siyatha – Who are the companies funding them ?????

    ReplyDelete
  39. It seems like that Sri Lankan Electronic Media industry have meet some financial troublems.

this matter has come overdue specially in radio services. within next two or three years Tv stations will face this. Only two or three major companies can survive from this.

This situation shows us the need of dedicated media stations, such as news, drama, documentaries, sports and religious. (this for TV's)

for an example when TNL radio re brand there Asura fm to Rhythm fm (dedicated youth channel) they became the first position in radio station in island. (Hiru and Sirasa had to change their regular program line up to compete Rhytm. also Asura was a dedicated channel but the programme line up and the presenting style was like in 90's.

When Ran fm launched on 2007 as dedicated sinhala retro channel like Asura fm, within two years now they have reaching some pleased position on radio industry. The secret of there success is introducing new method for radios, and the old but fresh, presenting style. and the jingles did some great work.

My point is media channels need their own concept to stable in this industry.

Sirasafm did this in 1994 and they still doing this.

I think you all can remember

    Sirasa nethnam wedak ne

    Saddantha kule

    Sirasai para kiyanne

    Sirasai lagama neya

    Sirasa nedekan sada kalikan

So using those concept sirasa fm still on the first 3 places in radio industry since 1994, without chaning their brand name.

  67. Prime Radio, Prime TV:

    New grand releases from ITN
The popular TV channel ITN will launch a new radio station and a TV channel to serve the English-speaking listeners and viewers in our country. The official launch, according to Aruna Siriwardhana, Chairman of ITN will take place on Thursday, November 12 at 10.00 a.m.

"The new radio station will be called Prime Radio, while the TV channel will be Prime TV and our objective in commencing these two broadcasting channels is in keeping with the Mahinda Chintana to serve all the needs at the people. Up till now ITN was reaching out mainly to the Sinhala speaking population and we found it was not sufficient. In May this year we commenced Vasantham TV, a channel broadcasting in the Tamil language. In April 2008 we commenced Vasantham FM (Radio) to reach out to our Tamil listeners. The local content is the need of the hour and as such Prime TV will be a 24-hour channel while Prime Radio's broadcasting hours will be for 19 hours from 6.00 a.m. to 12 midnight."

Radio listeners will be happy to note that Prime Radio will broadcast English retro music and recorded music programmes with listener participation. The pre-recorded programme content will include news, current affairs, entertainment and education programmes.

The personnel to operate the two channels - radio and TV have already been recruited many from the industry.

New talent which is important has not been overlooked and a mixed batch of youth and not so young have been recruited and trained to man the channels.

The Chairman thanked President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Ministers for the support and encouragement given to this venture of ITN which enables listeners and viewers to appreciate and participate daily, in something new.
