The new Yes FM morning show

It is has been sometime since the new Yes FM morning show was launched and it will be totally unfair of us to expect it to be the same standard as the old one since Shaq and Mark were a unique combination.

However with three DJ's being involved instead of the traditional two it should be said that the show is gaining in popularity once again. This show is way better than the Sun FM Morning Show which is trying to copy the Shaq and Mark style and is making a total mess of things instead of following a unique style of their own.

The Yes FM Morning Show has a lot of room for improvement and could do much better. There are some aspects of the show that should be removed and enhanced with more creative stuff. The way the promotions are being carried gives the impression that the winners are at times premeditated.

We are looking forward to your comments on how Yes FM can improve this morning show and how you perceive this show to be in comparison with the morning shows of the other English Language radio stations.

HI! Yes, i agree, The YES FM Morning show is the best. I think the new show is far better than the shaq & mark show.
What i really like about YES FM is...they are very unique, they don't try to copy anyone or any other stations, they do their own thing and stand out. They are a very creative and bold station, as in doing new things all the time, a challenge is far better than imitation.
Shaq is easily the best..no...the no 1, presenter in Sri Lanka.
I remember, when Mark was doing the show alone, nobody new him but when Shaq got him on the morning show, only then did people knew he existed.
Shaq is a great role modal for anybody who wants to get into radio! Now i am sure Ross & Shehara too will be very popular. Thanks to Shaq.
Mark should remember that who he is today is partly because of Shaq!!!

at the end of the day, whatever said and done, i still say kudos to e! i have been an avid listener of e! fm (and i guess will always be). i met all the old jocks including rozanne, sean cruz, and many others. though e! fm is dominated by new voices and new promos, i still think that e! fm
sticks to its (original)policy, "we do things differently".

and by the way, to all the bloggers out there, before you send something, kindly check your spelling.

Happened to catch the Yes FM morning show. Honestly, I hate to sound patronising but its truly an insult to the sensibility of any listener with a modicum of sophistication and taste. And a severe test of one's patience what with all the on-air fumbling, lack of articulation, banal nondescript chatter interspersed with more idle and nonsensical prattle. I could hardly bear to stay on the frequency . Ironically though, its easily the "best" English language morning show islandwide. I'm an outsider living in Sri Lanka at the moment and am saddened that of the many highly educated, very well spoken Sri Lankans, not one has been allowed into the English Broadcasting arena. Wonder why! any thoughts on that?

Man, of course YES Fm Morining Show is th da best morning show in SRI LANKA. But you can't say that it's better than the morning show we had when SHAQ & MARK was doing da show.

Wonder where is MARK now?
anyone......

Mark is at EFM

his show is starting on the 10th

I agree with the person who commented above - it is pathetic that people even think the sad, repetitive prattle and giggles that pass for the Yes FM morning Show is considered the best in Sri Lanka at the moment. The show is for morons, in my opinion. It is irritating to listen to all the non-stop yadda yadda that goes for chat, and all 3 announcers have not an iota of originality in their cnstant chatter!
If you want to listen to somebody who sounds like he has a modicum of intelligence listen to the guy who does the TNL Lite morning show. He discusses daily issues in a sensible manner & has a nice, dry sense of humour as well.

SLT IPTV is not going to be for us.It is only for ADSL Office express not for ADSL home express. The rental for office express is 6750+VAT and on top of that rental for IPTV. I got this information from SLT maketing dipatment. Can go to 1243 (free call) and ask for maketing.

There are people talking about moron's on yes fm...but you've got a right royal one on this blog...
the guy talking about IPTV is a mara "yanne koheda malle pol" case no...
let's hope none of the morning shows put this info on-air...cheers

Anonymous said...

ha ha...the pol comment was good!! see the problem is people in this country think that the general english speaking community is dumb around them, just because some jack ass or in yes fm's case a bunch of silly asses go on air everyday and think they are doing the world a favour by talking shot for 4 hours....man the only time i spent more than 5 mins on radio was when shaq and mark used to do the show, atleast they were real!! shit check out that sun fm crap. why, why why, do they have to sound so bad, why and how did they get on air?? radio was on the up in sunny srilanka, but somewhere between the fake accents and the bullshit chatter everyone has lost there way including the listeners and bloggers on this site(yes im guilty myself)...yes fm is not the best station in the country, sun fm is, but sun fm actually sucks(music is all over the place- appealing to the masses)...yes fm is number 2-focused music...gold fm is 3(probably drop in ratings after jimmy and the gang left...e fm is number 4(might sky rocket after mark joined??). the people on this site are probably just biased towards yes cause they listen to it too. anyway i was really jobless to write for this long.

Anonymous said...

e fm was crap up till mark joined them, i think he is heading the station cause the music has honestly improved.

if he is starting on the 10th like one blogger said above then i will definetly be listening. but i dont think they are starting on the 10th cause they havnt made any noise about it.

all the best to e fm, mark the country is listening to you bro. all the best and we hope you keep it real and keep it krossed too!!

Anonymous said...

"music has improved?"

i listen to e! fm all the time and they still play the upbeat songs i like.

man, you must also be an avid listener of e! to notice the smallest change in their music.

have to say good job to all the guys at e! especially the presenters. keep it up.

Hi Sharm

Yes the TNL Lite morning show guy is definitely a darn Ttrio hosting Yes Fm morning show.
Been trying to place his accent - sounds Indian to me!
Anyone know his name?

Anonymous said...

sorry, that message, like the Yes FM morning show, made no sense!!

Here goes once again:

Yes, the TNL Lite morning show guy is a darn sight better than the Terrible Trio who host trhe Yes FM morning show.
Been trying to place his accent - sounds Indian to me!
Anyone know his name?

Anonymous said...

The TNL lite guy is sri lankan..he goes on air as Jay..not sure what his real name is...does a really good show..it's nice sometimes to move away from all the nonsense most of these DJ's yak about and listen to someone who's opiniated and knows what they're talking about...

Anonymous said...

Rajiv,

Thanks for responding . He does sound so much more sensible. Lucky chap. These other moronic RJs make him seem like a goddam genius!! This Jay person may just be the only intelligible and tolerable voice (in English ) on the airwaves at the moment. Isn't it shocking that with so MANY stations on air, none seem particularly bothered about content and presentation. Tell you what, even if one station gets its act together and goes for quality programming NOT completely lacking in imagination and style, the rest will have no choice but to follow and the overall standards will pick up. At the moment everyone seems to be part of a conspiracy to keep the mediocre standards going.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone given the new n improved TNL morning show a listen?

Anonymous said...

IF i remember correct this jay guy has some indian roots...tadah............

Anonymous said...

Yes, Jay in Indian…

Full name Navjot ‘Jay’ Singh

The TNL morning show needs help, oh boy that poor girl needs to listen to some guy who keeps going 'its nice' like some old record player...

but the chick who does the show, sounds good, and is not bad... but the music is good... i would check out the show, before i set off to work.

as for the Lite morning show, im not to sure, since i listen only to the evening show, and that girl is ok...

As for the 'e' show, ill never listen to it, since my car goes only up to 90fm,
so its only yes fm, gold, and TNL lite...

Dude ob mark took a break from radio no wonder he was forgotten by the "masses"....remeber after his stint as scott on E!?.......i belive it was like maybe after a year that he joined yes and then his true fans knew he was there .....but dude come on do people actually remember nirasha and tat other guy before her...they used to be shak's co hosts but man who remembers them???apart from their true fans??........i believe tat radio people like spy, shon de fry, anita and maybe to some extent , thoshan, rozanne, tracy, nigel and a few others can be called as radio role models as they expressed charcter into their radio time and unlike shaq who hardly brings it out except when he has a co-host ...he's really to be frank quite blah!....he is really rude which sometimes is quite enteraining but not all the time.
Im not saying this out of sheer hate or otherwise .......but lets face it he is sometimes and so are some other r.ps "im not only postin about yes but also other stations".........we need r.ps who display character and be witty and all that................n not just blah ones..........this is not to critize but hopefully bring about a good refreshing change

Hi Rajiv, False Accusation & Annonymous (get yourself a name, mate)
The TNL Lite morning show guy must be Sri Lankan, cos he makes some VERY caustic comments about Lankan politics & has a pretty decent grasp of current affairs.
A radio show, in my opinion, should primarily be full of good music (afterall that's why we listen to the radio in the first place). A show must also contain segments that will be of interest to the target audience, ie sports, weather, traffic, etc. My grouse is, with internet & so many other avenues of information available so easily to most, why do most local DJs insist on talking for the sake of talking. Some keep on saying "You know" ad nauseam, others repeat words like 'right' all the time.
Why don't we start a discussion about what we WANT to hear on air, instead of what we don't want?

Anonymous said...

Yo Sharm,

See - got myself a name . Anonymous no more, man! You're absolutely on the button when u say a blog on radio and tv should discuss the kind of content listeners want to hear on the air waves. According to a recent US survey, listeners are loooking primarily for music that entertains them, and the second most important reason they tune it is - News. Do Sri Lankan listeners feel the same way? why not conduct our own little survey..How many of you do tune into radio looking for news? Or given the nature and quality of most news bulletins i hear, how many of you would tune into a frequency based on whether they had kick ass news bulletins ?

Sharm said...

Hi Serendipity,
I for one am a news buff but I do like good music as well, so its got to be a good mix of music, news and intelligent talk, if there is such a thing possible on our radio! (It would also be nice if there is no gender stereotyping on radio, ie recipes and fashion news for women but not news or current affairs discussions, on the assumption that women do not dig that sort of stuff)
Do our Radio stations do listner surveys regularly? Afterall radio is a business & the first precept in any business is to make money. Best way to make money is to cater to your market. It would be something new if radio listener surveys are done using a good-sized and representive sample & results published - all those who are having juvenile rows in these blog pages arguing about which radio station is the best will then have something solid to argue about!

Anonymous said...

Sharm, Its surprising, but there is very little effort invested by media houses in general to determine what the market wants . so everything is a shot in the dark. I don't think surveys are carried out by any television or radio station so they are clueless as to what their audiences want. And yes, they are constantly "dumbing down" to their listener community. The women-are -not intetrested-in-news-and-current affairs myth is one example. Perhaps women RJs can do something to bust that belief.. Ryan on Yes FM is probably the only woman presenter who makes the effort (or atleast used to - i haven't tuned into her shows latelY) to include issues of the day in her chatter...And why is everything so overtly and obviously promotion oriented?? Its like - 'we don't have anything of value for you to listen to but come to our frequency to win something or other, and make it worth your while'. Sure, elsewhere too promos are a big part of the radio marketing culture and so they should be. BUt do it with some finesse.

Sharm said...

Yo Serendipity!
Sorry for long silence, away from home and laptop busted..
You talk a good deal of sense, I think we should move this discussion to the current thread on E-FM on this Forum.
Lets see whether any of these guys going on about E and Yes FM DJs and who has more listners, etc etc want to actually have a sensible discussion about what can be done to improve the Sri Lankan radio experience for most people.

Oh wow Sharm u little kid who lives in colombo 05.......really u on a mission to change the way radio in sri lanka? wow here comes a superhero in the making....sheesh....u aint no howard stern little girl...go back to yer books n yer witchy mum

Sharm said...

Hi Annonymous, you are a confused little troll, aren't you? Howard Stern was a shock jock who introduced obnoxious 'reality' stuff on-air, I don't live in Colombo 5, my mom is long dead, and my studying days are long gone. Why don't you stick to the point? Better still, if you have nothing worthwhile to say, don't say anything at all!

Anonymous said...

well said sharm...
why are these morons allowed to post useless blabber on this site..
let's talk about radio proper...
here's smthn for ppl to respond to..
1. Rate your choice of radio stations on a scale of 1 to 10
2. Rate your favorite Radio Shows
3. What do you want from a Radio Station...

Anonymous said...

If you do your home work write, you would relize Shaq is the NO 1 RJ at the moment and has been for the past 6- 7 years or so.
He has his own style and thats why his show was so popular and still is!

Why not talk to the people in the industry itself and ask them, who they would rate as the best.

People like Mark are the ones who have forgotten who made them. And, we all know what happens to people who forget their pasts....the humble beginings.

OH! and e fm = Mark.....i feel for the rest of the 'e' crew.

Anonymous said...

Ooops!! sorry. I got some typos before. It should be "rite" and "realized".

Should never be a afraid or ashamed to admit a mistake.

We learn from them!!!

Sharm said...

Yo Rajiv,
Your 3 questions are spot-on, but I think Annonymous who commented after you shows the typical wires-crossed attitude of some bloggers on this site. We, as the public, do not need to know what people in the industry think of themselves, that is not our problem at all. The public want to improve their listening experience, not get in to cat fights about which RJ is better & why. I would rate TNL Lite, Yes FM, E-FM, TNL & Gold FM in that order, from best at the moment to not-so-good. I want us all to discuss our opinions here, and not vilify anybody for the opinions they hold. BTW it would be nice if all who comment have a name, instead of Annonymous!

Anonymous said...

i would say TNL Lite, Gold FM, yes FM, Tnl radio, Efm , sun fm

also i think these last few comments our in the wrong page/blog!!!!
